The weather may be suggesting otherwise sometimes but summer is *hopefully* on its way in the next few months. There’s something about when the clocks change that puts a spring in my step and gets me excited for the summer months. However, my skin is never looking quite its best in the winter months as it has spent so much time indoors or subjected to wind and rain. Now that we’re creeping into summer territory there are a few things that I’m starting to try and get that summer glow ready for when the warm weather does arrive.
SUMMER GLOW SKINCARE
Skincare is something that is so important all year round but when I want to get a bit more of a glow for summer then I focus on it even more. This is where Liz Earle comes in. Their new Cleanse and Glow Cleanser* is perfect for the summer months! Described as melting away impurities, cleansing and brightening skin and minimising pores it ticks a lot of boxes. It has a lovely gel to oil to milk formula that makes it feel incredibly luxurious. I often find cleansers, even when they claim to be hydrating, leave my skin feeling a bit tight but I don’t have that with this. I massage this into my hands before applying to dry skin before adding water to it and then removing. My skin has been looking brighter and it feels delightful, I must say. My skin is a big thing for me and I often struggle with it. Anything that helps it to feel smooth and looking glowing is a win for me.
HYDRATION
Summer should be warm. And when warm weather strikes it’s so incredibly important to stay hydrated. When your skin is exposed to higher temperatures and sunshine it can feel dehydrated and look lacklustre. The best way to prevent this and to keep your summer glow for longer is to keep drinking. The benefits of water are so vast! It can help skin issues like eczema and aid your digestive system which can improve your complexion. I’ve certainly noticed that the more water I drink, especially in summer, not only do I have more energy but my skin is improved as well.
TANNING
Nothing screams summer glow like a tan. However, tanning naturally is not the best for your skin so fake tan is the way to go in my opinion. I’ve never been a fake tan person but I am very pale. Recently, I’ve been trying to learn how to use fake tan. If I’m honest, I’ve had a few disasters and plenty of orange streaks but also I’m slowly starting to get the hang of it. The key for me is prep work. Make sure you’re well moisturised (especially on your elbows, knees, and ankles), shaved (if you want to) and exfoliated 24 hours before applying. The prep work makes for a much better tan. Having just a subtle glow about me instantly makes me feel more confident in myself and ready for summer. This is definitely one of those times where faking it is the best option!
SUNCREAM
Along a similar line to tan, suncream is essential for a summer glow. The sun can be so incredibly damaging so you need to ensure you protect yourself when exposed to the sun. Suncream is something that should be worn all year-round and is even more vital in summer. Sunburn is not a good look and if you want a healthy glow, sun burn is not going to help!
MOISTURISE
The sun can be drying and damaging and if you want your skin to be looking as good as it can, keeping it hydrated can help it to look healthy. I know that I’m so bad at moisturising consistently but I love the feeling of my skin when I keep on top of it. There’s something so nice about slathering yourself in some summery-scented moisturiser when you’re abroad and feeling like you’ve got your life together. The more you keep your tan moisturised as well, the longer it will last so it’s definitely something worth doing!
I’m very excited for summer this year. I’m hoping the UK will have some sunny days but I also have my first holiday abroad since before COVID. Having a summer glow is something I aspire to have every year and is about getting into better habits. None of these are essential but I always find if I want to feel a bit more summer-ready and confident then these are a great place to start. Spending time looking after my skin, making sure I drink enough and applying a bit of fake tan every now and then always help me to get my summer glow starting and let me feel excited for summer!
